If you still have not seen The Babadook, you need to get your butt over to Netflix right now and watch it. By far the greatest horror film of 2014 and debatably one of the greatest of the past decade, this Australian-Canadian film centers around a widowed mother and her young son and their experience with the mysterious storybook creature--the Babadook.
The film, written and directed by Jennifer Kent, is not your typical modern horror film. It does, however, reminisce of another time where horror was more subtle and less reliant on jump scares. Less gore, more suspense. The music alone is enough to send chills down your spine. The Exorcist (1973) Director William Friedkin even described The Babadook as the most terrifying film he'd ever seen.
So if you're looking for a film without cheap tricks and instead a film with an original plot the leaves you with a troubling sensation that you're not alone in your room at night, watch The Babadook, currently streaming on Netflix.
