#SLASHERWEEK :: "The Freddy"
Today in celebration of #SLASHERWEEK here at Too Into It, we are honoring our most favorite slasher villain of all: Freddy Krueger.
Krueger is portrayed by the brilliant Robert Englund in the original Wes Craven classic A Nightmare on Elm Street ('84), A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge ('85), A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors ('87), A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: Dream Master ('88), A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: Dream Child ('89), Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare ('91), Wes Craven's New Nightmare ('94), Freddy vs. Jason ('03), and the television series Freddy's Nightmares ('88-'90). Jackie Earle Haley portrayed Krueger in the 2010 reboot.
Freddy is more than just a cliche slasher. Wes Craven has cited a combination of things as inspiration for the character, from a bully who picked on him as a child, to a burnt homeless man who stalked him, even a real life horror story about a group of Cambodian immigrants that died while having nightmares. Freddy represents subconscious fears of the characters and attacks children, unsafe from their incompetent and neglecting parents. Freddy's trademark look of his red and green striped sweater, brown fedora, burnt face, and brown glove with long metal claws has changed slightly throughout the years, though the style is always undoubtably Freddy. The attitude and personality of the character has differed between films as well, from dark and menacing to silly and wise cracking. This charm and complexity makes Freddy Krueger simultaneously lovable and terrifying.
One, two, Freddy's coming for you.
Three, four, better lock your door.
Five, six, grab a crucifix.
Seven, eight, gonna stay up late.
Nine, ten, never sleep again....
For this cocktail, we decided to honor Mr. Englund's Sweedish heritage by making our own version of Krask, a traditional Swedish drink of moonshine and black coffee. Only we leave our strong liquor for the end to ensure a fiery display, a la Freddy's death.
What You Need:
- cold brew coffee
- simple syrup
- flammable liquor (Everclear, Bacardi 151)
- long stem lighter or match
What You Do:
- Using a cocktail shaker, mix some ice with the cold brew coffee and simple syrup to taste and strain into the mug.
- Using an upside down spoon, gently pour your flammable liquor atop the drink.
- Remove any liquor from yourself and surrounding areas, and light up!
- Admire your cocktails menacing homage to Freddy himself.
- Blow out the flame, add some creamer if you fancy, and drink!
- Never sleep again.
